The world remembers Bob Ross as the soft spoken man with the perm who painted happy little trees on television. The reality is that his iconic calm was actually a radical personal rebellion. Before he ever stood in front of a camera with a palette in his hand, he spent twenty years working as a United States Air Force master sergeant. His primary job every single day was to scream and bark orders at other people.

When his military service finally ended, he made a firm promise to himself to never raise his voice again. That famous gentle whisper and those patient brushstrokes were his way of atoning for a very loud and aggressive past.

The Joy of Painting hit the airwaves right when the television landscape was getting hijacked by the fast and noisy consumerism of the 1980s. While networks were desperately fighting for attention with chaotic visuals and rapid fire editing, Bob Ross offered the exact opposite. He provided a half hour of pure visual therapy.
